Brimming with old-world charm and a rich cultural history, Chester is a cosmopolitan city renowned for its cobbled streets framed by quaint timber-framed buildings. ABode Chester is set within a coveted spot in the heart of the city, just a short walk from shops, remarkable historic sites and a lively nightlife. If you’re looking to pass time in this fascinating city, we’ve knocked up a short guide, there’s always something to do around here!

Cultural

Home to two unique theatre spaces, a boutique cinema and an inspirational library, head to Storyhouse to experience everything from home-produced new stage adaptations to comedy nights. The Grosvenor Museum accommodates an impressive collection of art and artefacts and you can even trace Chester’s social history in their Period House, where each room is themed around everyday life throughout the centuries.

History

For a fascinating insight into Chester’s colourful history, walk the two-mile circuit along the walls that surround the historic centre, once the city’s ancient defensive walls. Stop off at the Eastgate clock –originally built for Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee – or visit the wishing steps, where local legend claims that your wish will come true if you run up and down the steps while holding your breath! Be absorbed by the beautiful gothic architecture of Chester Cathedral and take in the fantastic views of the city and countryside beyond at the top of the bell tower. Explore the remains of the Roman amphitheatre or be transported back in time at the medieval Chester Castle.

Nightlife

Meander through the cobbled streets of Chester and you’ll find an eclectic mix of pubs, bars and restaurants tucked away in every corner. Take in the rustic charm of one of the city’s many traditional pubs or watch the evening unfold with a cocktail in hand in a lively bar.

Shopping

Unique to Chester, the two-tiered galleried Rows of timber-framed buildings house high-street staples and an array of independently owned stores offering jewellery, clothing and homeware. Just a five-minute walk away, the Grosvenor Shopping Centre is an indoor shopping destination housing over 60 stores. Be sure to head to the charming cobbled streets of Godstall Lane and Rufus Court to watch the world go by in one of the many cosy cafés.
